Among the performers were Ray Bremser, “who was in and out of jail in those days,” and Kerouac, who stood upon his barstool to engage the crowd and managed to bump his head on the low metal ceiling. “It was very, very packed, because the Beat generation was ‘hot,’ so to speak,” Sanders said in a phone interview. The now 77-year-old poet and singer Edward Sanders remembers attending his first Gaslight reading in 1958 as a young NYU student. Officially, 110 people were allowed, but Mitchell often crammed in way more. Not only Ginsberg and Kerouac, but also LeRoi Jones (later Amiri Baraka), Gregory Corso, Bob Kaufman, Hugh Romney and Diane di Prima were among those who read for an often packed house. A year earlier, Allen Ginsberg’s poem Howl had reached national recognition as the result of a widely publicized obscenity trial and Jack Kerouac’s On The Road had finally made it into print. The Gaslight in the late 50s, with Liz’s 65-cent hamburgers advertised in the window of Caricature (© Photo-File Service)Īt the Gaslight, Beat poets would showcase their radiating works of non-conformity, sex, spirituality and drugs. It followed earlier Greenwich Village artist hubs like Pfaff’s, frequented by Walt Whitman, and Cedar Tavern, where Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning hung out. Initially dubbed the Gaslight Poetry Café, the basement between 3rd Street and Bleecker in one of New York’s most eccentric neighborhoods, soon became a fixture of Manhattan’s bohemian life. Liz would serve many a hungry performer her 65-cent hamburgers even when they were flat broke and was, understandably, widely loved.Īfter finally opening up, Mitchell invited poets to entertain his coffee-sipping crowd. He kept alcohol off the menu, allowing the Gaslight to stay open throughout the night. “Mitchell was the world’s foremost maniac,” blues and folk singer Dave Van Ronk writes in his memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street, supporting his friend Liz, who ran the small restaurant above the Gaslight called Caricature. His do-it-yourself approach had made a mess of his neighbor’s plumbing, however, and resulted in the first of many confrontations. After a year he finally got permission to open up, but this troublesome relationship with the authorities would continue to pester the coffee house throughout its existence.Īccording to legend, Mitchell had dug out the accumulated dirt himself in an attempt to make the seven-foot basement a bit more accessible. Since then, an antique store, a plumbing warehouse and several different workshops quickly succeeded one another, as Mitchell argued in a letter that was intended to convince the municipality of the fact that the venue had been used for non-residential purposes before. Throughout the 1920s and ‘30s, the cellar had served as a speakeasy for a mostly gay and literary clientele, frequented by the notorious Jazz Age poet Maxwell Bodenheim, among others. Back in 1957 he had found a shallow basement on MacDougal Street in an 1883 landmark building and saw its potential. That owner was a man named John Mitchell. Instead, we are moving on, hoping to find a new facility that will truly invest in my Dad and help him with this final chapter of his life no matter how difficult it might become, he deserves that, my Mother deserves that!!Gaslight Village has failed my Dad, my Mother, my family, and standing up for common decency is the right thing to do.The stairs that led down to the Gaslight (© Hannah Mattix) Why not learn from my Dad’s journey with this disease, what a resource he might have been to you. NEWS FLASH he has Alzheimer’s!!! They wander, they try to leave, they pack up their clothes, and to discard him and my Mother this way is just wrong and heartbreaking on so many levels. In fact we have been asked to leave after 3 short months, now scrambling to find Dad a new home being told, “Your Dad needs to leave, he wanders and tries to escape and we can’t have that here”. One would also believe that the staff and director would be trained to handle these types of behaviors and situations, but unfortunately that has not been the case with my Dad. One would naturally think that would or could include dealing with cognitive issues such as memory decline, delusion, aggression, restlessness, paranoia, and the long list of unmentionables that come with the disease. To those considering placing a parent or loved one at this facility, please heed my warning if your parent or loved one has succumb to the debilitating, life robbing disease known as Alzheimer’s.Gaslight Village claims to handle all stages of Alzheimer which is plainly noted on their website. Though the free tier has access to only three server locations and doesn't include the full suite of features you get with a paid subscription, it delivers the same level of encryption and includes the privacy features you need. Proton VPN imposes no such limitations on its free users. The vast majority of free VPNs impose heavy restrictions on things like data allowance, usage time and connection speeds, making them practically useless for anything beyond the most negligible of online activities. Proton VPN is currently the best free VPN. That's why all of our top recommended VPN services come with either a 30-day assessment trial or a free version of the paid service. Your budget is important, but choosing a quality VPN service that ensures your online safety is a top priority. Taking advantage of free trials, money-back guarantees or free subscription tiers available from our list of trusted VPN providers is always your best bet. Settling for a free VPN that's unstable isn't worth the few bucks saved each month. Picking any free VPN at random is a risky endeavor. At this time, though, the only free VPN recommended by CNET is Proton VPN's free tier, due to its robust performance, security and lack of data caps. That said, if saving money is the top priority, our VPN experts have uncovered a collection of reliable VPN service providers that pass years of rigorous testing with flying colors. They're generally slower than a paid premium VPN and, more often than not, these services will put a limit on the amount of data you're able to use. More importantly, it's common for free VPNs to sell your data or be packed with harmful malware. But while using a 100% free VPN is tempting, it's almost impossible to find a free VPN that doesn't skimp on performance or ease of use. At home, Hamilton was a recipient of many honorary degrees and awards, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Hamilton traveled to Greece in 1957 to be made an honorary citizen of Athens and to see a performance in front of the Acropolis of one of her translations of Greek plays. These were followed by The Prophets of Israel (1936), Witness to the Truth: Christ and His Interpreters (1949), Three Greek Plays, translations of Aeschylus and Euripides (1937), Mythology (1942), The Great Age of Greek Literature (1943), Spokesmen for God (1949) and Echo of Greece (1957). If you can get a hold of the 75th Anniversary edition, do so The beautiful hardback cover, Illustrations by Jim Tierney, multiple double-page family trees and gold chapter header and border detailing make it an obvious choice. The book was a critical and popular success. I really enjoy reading Mythology and Edith Hamilton’s ‘Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes’ has been no exception. In 1930, when she was sixty-three years old, she published The Greek Way, in which she presented parallels between life in ancient Greece and in modern times. After her retirement in 1922, she started writing and publishing scholarly articles on Greek drama. For the next twenty-six years, she directed the education of about four hundred girls per year. Hamilton returned to the United States in 1896 and accepted the position of headmistress of the Bryn Mawr Preparatory School in Baltimore, Maryland. The following year, she and her sister Alice went to Germany and were the first women students at the universities of Munich and Leipzich. Hamilton's education continued at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, and at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from which she graduated in 1894 with an M.A. Her father began teaching her Latin when she was seven years old and soon added Greek, French, and German to her curriculum. Part of transmutation is patience - making a permanent transmutation may take years or even lifetimes to master. It is an excellent beginner’s transmutational stone, so long as one accepts the transmuted substances may well revert to their original forms in time. This powerful object can be used to transfer motes of elements to one another, iron to gold, and mithril to truesilver. Believe that you shall create the stone, and so it shall become a teal, pearlescent orb within your hands. Whether that belief is to something above or something within is entirely subjective. To create a Philosopher’s Stone, four crystals of black vitriol (they are always similar to exact in size, for whatever reason), should be held in the hands with four small ingots or pieces of equally weighted iron, four blooms of purple lotus, and four blooms of Firebloom. It resembles warm, verdant rainwater in a bumpy but beautiful glassy rock. This stone is quite honestly more beckoned than formed, six motes of primal life whispered into stone by two nether vortexes and gently held in place. Redeemer’s Alchemist Stone - This stone was rumored to be gifted to the Draenei by the Naaru A’dal herself. For this reason, it is only used by those who can control or manipulate heat. It grows quite warm and then unbearably hot in the hands. The trouble of transmutation here is holding onto the stone as it is transmuted. Primal fire is bound sixfold with the vortexes of nether to create this amber object of rippling flame. Sorcerer’s Alchemist Stone - Clearly a stone of Sin’dorei imagining, harnessing the power of spells - namely fire. The Quel’dorei have been known to use this stone to consecrate fallen comrades for burial. It is a dangerous stone to make if one does not know how to control wind, and it is prone to slicing through flesh unless contained. This stone is made with six motes of primal air held by nether vortexes, bolstering defenses in battle by carrying the might of wind. Guardian’s Alchemist Stone - A Quel’dorei contribution, palm-sized and gleaming silver. In the wrong hands, it is a sentence of death. In the right hands, it is a powerful tool. This transmutation requires an Alchemist Stone bound by six motes of primal shadow, imbued to the stone with two vortexes of nether pulled from the twisting nether itself. This stone is perhaps amongst the rarest of the sister stones, and was made by the Arakkoa alchemists of the lower city for use by their people and those like them - cursed in some way, or users of shadow. The color of this stone resembles a calcified, bloody organ. Their configurations are listed below.Īssassin’s Alchemist Stone - Thusly named for its sinister power of shadow, increased greatly in battle. Sister Stones, or stones that can be transmuted from a successfully made Alchemist Stone, truly showcase the ingenuity and skill of the various races of Outland. Successfully transmuting an alchemy stone of this variety is ironically far more difficult than using said stone for its intended purposes - but such is the strange beauty of transmutation. Both the creation of primal might and the creation of Romuul’s alchemy stone require patience, belief, and a surmountable but herculean amount of skill and will. Primal might itself is a combination of equal ratios primal earth, air, fire, water, and mana. Each object must be melded to the Philosopher’s Stone separately with a mote of a substance called Primal Might. In the hands must be held the Philosopher’s Stone, an earthstorm diamond, a skyfire diamond, and two blossoms of Fel Lotus. It is an advanced form of the primordial philosopher’s stone, and requires the Philosopher’s Stone created with black vitriol and herbs as a base for transfiguration. Their recipes are as follows:Īlchemist Stone - A transmutation formed by Romuul and enhanced by the Sha’tari. These stones are of course more commonly used now to transmute elemental motes found in Outland or stones and gems from the shattered continent, but at their time were regular tools carried by those who served the Shattered Sun. This is one of the first known accounts of a transmutational stone being used to change the tide in a major modern battle. Each subsequent stone made by the Shattered Sun, called a “sister stone”, seems to suit a certain race or fighting style within battle. In the true spirit of Draenei generosity, these stones and their creation process were made public knowledge accessible to all. It is quite likely that the great artificier Romuul used these stones for pure transmutational means aboard the Exodar, quite timely and resourceful on his part. Draenei, the great artificiers, created powerful versions of the alchemist’s stone used by the Shattered Sun Offensive to combat Kael’thas, the mad king, as his power spread like poison across Outland and Azeroth.
